So we have talked about this before: the average family in the U.S. spends over $9,000 in their baby's first year. And that does not even include childcare!

It feels like there are a million things that your baby needs, especially within their first year. And especially if this is your very first baby.

I would love to help you save some of those 1,000s of dollars with a sustainable baby registry -- lower cost for you and on the environment!

Hi, I'm Katie, a mama, a coach and a podcaster, who is focused on empowering eco-minded mamas to live sustainably: saving $1,000s and living a life that is in alignment with their core values, so that they can care for their families and their environment.

In today's episode, I have created a free template for our sustainable baby registry for you (linked below). Okay, let's get into it and I'll tell you more about it...

Katie Kurpanek:

So we have talked about this before, the average family in the US spends over $9,000 in their baby's first year. And that does not even include childcare. It feels like there are a million things that your baby needs, especially within their first year. And especially if this is your very first baby, so let me help you to save some of those 1000s of dollars with a low waste baby registry. Hi, I'm Katie, I am a mama a coach and a podcaster, who is focused on empowering eco minded mamas to live sustainably, saving 1000s of dollars and living a life that is in alignment with their core values, so that they can care for their families and their environment. In today's episode, I have created a low waste baby registry for you. So be sure to check out the episode description so that you can download that. Okay, let's get into it. So I shared this resource in another episode, I will link it in the episode description as well. This is a website called Baby Center. And on that website, you can use their Baby Cost Calculator to get an estimate for about how much it's going to cost you in your baby's first year. So using that data, I went through it and I found some of the higher cost items. So things like diapers and wipes that is averaging about $1,100 in a year. Clothing averages the average family about $984 a year, a car seat about $230, a basic stroller about $309. And then room furnishings, I kind of put this whole category together. So things like the crib, the crib mattress, the changing table, what else was on there, the baby monitor, Sound Machine, things like that, about $1,300. And then there were all these other things that were on their list that I won't get into right now. But those were some of the like top cost items, and most of those things, we would pretty much consider essential. So this is where I really emphasize to lean into our community. And baby showers are an excellent way to do this. We don't need to buy everything new, especially not all on our own. And it makes way more sense to ask our community, our family members, our friends who already want to bless us and support us during this time. Right. That's kind of where the whole idea of the baby registry comes in. But instead of getting a bunch of like really cute things that you didn't necessarily need or want, then, you know, people create their registries on places like Target or Amazon. But it, it works to an extent. It doesn't always work out well if you are an eco minded mama. So if you are eco minded, then you likely value products that are non toxic, plastic, free, sustainable, you know all those different labels, things like that you may have particular brands and businesses that you want to support that's really important to you. Maybe you want to support like small, locally owned businesses, or just smaller scale businesses that are doing a lot to care for the planet. And these items aren't always available on like the big box store registry sites, you know, Amazon, Target, Babies R Us or whatever that is. So maybe there's also very specific businesses and brands or types of products that you do not want to support, that you do not want in your home, you don't want them on your baby's skin, etc. This is how I am too. So I found it was easier to just create my own baby registry template back in 2020 when we had our baby shower for my son, and I have since used that same template and just recustomized it for Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, etc. I've also shared it with friends who requested it because they loved it back at my baby shower in 2020. This template is super easy to customize and can make the list fit your family and your unique needs and wants. And then it's digital. So it is super easy to just share it via email or Facebook or even texting however you're communicating with your family and friends and baby shower guests. So now you will have a way to save 1000s of your own dollars with the help of your community in buying so many of these essential items for your baby and they already want to support you but now they can know for sure that they are contributing something that your family highly values and actually wants. Okay, so be sure to click the link in the episode description so that you can download your own customizable copy for free. And if you want more support when it comes to What do I actually put on this template? like, I have a lot of items on there for you that I put into the template and you can change them if you want. But if you're wondering like What other kinds of products should I be putting on this registry? What other kinds of brands and businesses are out there that are super sustainable and I want to know for sure that they are not greenwashing me, or I want to know that they're for sure safe and non toxic, totally sustainable etc. Then you can join The Eco-Minded Mama Collective today to receive more personalized guidance from me and from an online community of mom friends who are just like you all supporting each other on a monthly basis to save money and care for our families and the earth. All of that is linked in the episode description. I hope to see you on the inside of that Collective membership and until then, I will be back next week with another supporting episode on living sustainably, I will talk to you then!
